Further functions

These additional functions can be accessed via the menu and keyboard shortcuts.

Files Menu

Statistics
Computes some simple statistics about the slips, keywords and scents in a box. The averages of slip scents and keyword scents indicate how densely the items in the box are interconnected.
Note that the number of keywords in these statistics is the number of different keywords in the box, not the number of keywords entered in the keywords field. (Thus, the number of keywords is the same number as the number of items listed in the inspector.)

Edit Menu

Copy Slip
In the slip view and alternating scent view: copies the current slip to the pasteboard. In the search view: copies the selected (not the flagged!) slips to the pasteboard.

Paste Slip
Pastes the slips from the pasteboard and appends them to the current SlipBox document.

Clear Slip Fields
Clears all fields of the current slip.

View Menu

Zoom
Zooms the contents of the slip text field in the slip view.

Show Selected Slip(s) in Extra Window
In the slip view this shows the current slip in a new window. In the search view it shows the selected slips in the search results table in new windows. These windows are read-only, ie they cannot be edited. (But the "flagged" status of a slip can be changed.) By clicking the button in the lower right corner the extra slip window is closed and the slip is displayed in the main window. Note that these windows are not updated if the content of a slip changes after the window is opened.

Show Flagged Slip(s) in Extra Window
Same as the above function, except that the flagged slips are used.

Slip Menu

Go Back/Forward
History function like in web browsers or the Mac Finder.

Go To…
Opens a dialogue to enter that allows to enter an ID of a slip, which will then be displayed.

Random Slip
Randomly chooses a slip from the box and makes it the current slip.

Suggest Slip
Suggests a slip from the box that is linked to the current slip with a strong slip scent.

Add
Adds an empty slip to the box using the slip template.

Remove
Removes the slip from the box. The slip is not deleted but moved to the trash. Via View/Browse Trash slips can be searched just like in the normal view and reinserted to the box.

Split
Splits the current slip. It splits the slip text at the current cursor position. The first part of the text remains on the original slip, the second part is copied to a new slip together with copies of the original's keywords, source, type and author.

Merge
Merges one or more slips. If the function is called in the slip view, a dialogue requests the ID of the slip to merge with. Slip text, keywords and source of the specified slip are appended to the current slip. If the types on the slips differ, it changes to SLIP MERGE. The merged slip retains the ID of the current slip, the other slip is deleted (not moved to the trash). If the function is called in the search view, the selected slips are merged in the order in which they appear in the search results table. The target slip is the first of these.

Flag/Unflag
Flags or unflags a slip. Functions that can be applied to the flagged slips are sorting in the search view, printing, exporting or opening extra slip windows.

Make Slip Link
If a number is selected in the slip text field, it creates a manual link to this slip. Otherwise a dialogue opens that allows to enter a slip ID to link to.

Search Menu

Keyword Search/Source Search
Switches to the search view and creates a new search with the corresponding search type.

Saved Searches
Opens the inspector (if needed) and switches to the saved searches view.

Find Related Documents in Spotlight
Initiates a Spotlight search with the keywords of the current slip. Note that this function is always available (not only in the slip view) but always takes the keywords of the current slip.

Flag All Results
Only active in the search view. Flags all current search results.

Unflag All Slips
Unflags all slips in the box (not just the search results).

Format Menu

Highlight Text
Highlights the selected text in the current slip's text field in a pre-defined colour. This function is useful for highlighting text in citations if you are (like I) fussy about whether the cited text is bold or italic in the original. The colour can be set in the preferences dialogue.
